The emphasis on young players is due to a rule, introduced at the Barcelona 1992 Games, that imposed a maximum age of 23. Since Atlanta 1996, teams have been allowed to include three over-age players.

The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo 2020 will take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020. It will be fifty-six years after the Japanese capital hosting a Summer edition of the Olympics. It will be second time they have done so. As well as Tokyo, matches will also be played in Ibaraki, Saitama, Sapporo, Sendai, and Yokohama. Qualification matches will take place in 2019 and early 2020.
