What is the 2019 Copa America?

The Copa America is a quadrennial international men’s association football championship organized by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL. The national teams who are member of the South American Confederation compete to see who is the Champion of the region. This is the final edition that will be played on an odd year. From 2024 the competition will be played in the same year as other similar tournaments such as the Euro’s.

12 teams will play in the tournament. There had been some discussion about inviting 6 teams instead of the usual 2 to participate making it into a 16 team tournament but that idea was abandoned.

Which teams will play in the 2019 Copa America?

All ten CONMEBOL national teams will participate alongside the two invited teams Qatar and Japan in this tournament.

It will be Qatar’s debut appearance in the competition. They will be the first Arab Nation to participate in this tournament. It will be Japan’s second appearance at the Copa America but the last time they played in this tournament was back in 1999.

Mexico and the USA will not play in this years edition.

What venues will be used for the 2019 Copa America?

Six stadiums in five Brazilian cities will host the tournament: Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre. The opening match will be held at the Estádio do Morumbi in São Paulo, the semi-finals will be held at the Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre and Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, and the final will be held at the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.

Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro has a capacity of 74,738 and is the largest stadium in Brazil. The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. It also hosted the 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Estádio do Morumbi is in São Paulo and is the home of São Paulo Futebol Clube. It seats 85,000 people.

Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. It has a seating capacity of 49,205, making it the fifth-largest stadium used by teams in the top tier of the Brazilian League and the eleventh-largest in Brazil. It hosted six matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, including the opening match on 12 June 2014.

Estádio Mineirão erved as a venue in the many international competitions as 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It also hosted some matches of the football tournament of the 2016 Summer Olympics. The stadium has a seating capacity of 61,846 spectators.

Arena do Grêmio is home stadium of Grêmio. It has a seating capacity of 55,662 and is one of the most modern venues in South America.

Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova has a maximum capacity of 48,000 people. The stadium was first used for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the subsequent 2014 FIFA World Cup. It was used as one of the venues for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

2019 Copa America Fixtures & Dates

This years tournament kicks off on June 14th with an opening tie between the hosts Brazil and Bolivia.

The group stage will feature 18 matches taking place between June 14th and June 24th. The 12 teams will be whittled down to just 8 teams who will compete in the quarterfinals.

The quarter finals will take place on 27th, 28th and 29th June with the Semi-Finals taking place on the 2nd and 3rd July.

The final will take place on the 7th July at Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. With the third place play-offs on the 6th July.
